After picking up my keys from the police station, daddy and I headed to Donald’s with Officer Groves.
There was a nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach and my palms were sweaty as we grew closer to our destination. I looked in the side view mirror at Officer Groves’ car behind us. “I’m sure glad that he’s with us because I have a bad feeling about going over here."
“Everything is going to be alright baby girl.” Daddy assured me, reaching over, and patting me on my leg. “We are going to go over here, get your car, and leave. Simple as that. I doubt if anyone will act up due to the fact that you have the police with you.”
I shook my head, rubbing my sweaty palms on my jeans. “You never know daddy with these crazy folks.”
“Well, what I do know is, they can run their mouths all the want but if anyone lifts so much as a finger at you. They are going to be calling the meat wagon over here because I am going to put a few rounds in somebody’s ass.”
That made me laugh. Hearing my daddy curse was always funny to me because it wasn’t something that he did a lot. “Daddy, you are a mess.” I giggled like a little kid. I loved how protective he was over me. There were times when I had to ask him to back off some but for the most part I appreciated it.
“I’m not joking one bit.” He glanced over at me and then refocused his attention on the road. “I had to go home and pray harder last night than I’ve ever prayed before in my life because of how much hatred I had in my heart for that boy Darien. I honestly wanted to kill him for the way that he hurt you. Not just the physical damage that he did to you but the emotional and mental damage as well. He tried to make you feel worthless, like you were nothing. I don’t appreciate that because the woman that I raised is worth more than life itself. She’s worth me laying down and dying for and I feel like any man that enters her life should love her the same way.”
I blinked back tears listening to him speak about my worth. “Thank you daddy, that’s really sweet of you to say.”
“No, it’s not sweet La’Quela. It’s true.” He corrected me. “And until you realize that, you are going to keep going through this same thing with these sorry ass men. If you don’t recognize your worth then how can you expect them to?”
I hung my head in shame, not bothering to reply, and wiped the tears that were rolling down my cheeks.
“Lift your head up and stop that crying.” Daddy demanded and I did what I was told. I lifted my head and looked straight ahead. “This isn’t the end of the world. Like I told you last night, you live and you learn.
